Compression Stockings Included in New Guidelines for Venous Thromboembolism Treatment

Compression stockings were just one of the standard vein prevention and vein treatment tools included in new guidelines recently set forth for the prevention and treatment of venous thromboembolism in cancer patients.

"Venous thromboembolism is an increasingly common cause of morbidity and mortality among cancer patients," said Gary H. Lyman, MD, director of the Health Services and Outcomes Research Program in Oncology at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina, and cochair of American Society of Clinical Oncology's (ASCO) Venous Thromboembolism Expert Panel.

This condition causes significant problems for cancer patients, particularly those who are hospitalized for treatment of their cancer. The guidelines were created to let medical staff know about the importance of looking out for this vein problem when dealing with cancer patients. But of course, medical staff is not always good at keeping on top of the news that they should so it's important for the patient to also stay informed.

If you are being treated for any form of cancer, you will want to ask your doctor about the risk of venous thromboembolism. Vein prevention measurements may be put into place to assist you in avoiding this medical problem. At the very least, you'll know what the risks are as you continue your treatment.
