Jane Smith, M.D.

Prior to opening hew own office, Dr. Smith had trained and worked for several years in the field of Phlebology (the study and treatment of vein problems-which includes spider veins, varicose veins, leg ulcers, blood clots, swollen legs- to name a few.) Electing to work with a highly respected national organization, Dr. Smith underwent a rigorous, full-time training program over a period of almost four years. This involved studying and working alongside many different Physicians across the country who were highly experienced in this field. She traveled to many states to observe and learn from the techniques and approaches of many Physicians. She received the majority of her training in Atlanta, Georgia, where she trained full-time over a period of several months. She was committed to achieving the highest level of expertise possible. Her goal was to bring to the Raleigh area the quality, cutting edge care that existed in so many other areas of the country. She saw a huge need for quality, non-surgical vein treatment in the majority of North Carolina. The care of veins was her only focus as she began training in this new, rapidly evolving field. She felt that, to fully develop her skills, she had to concentrate all of her energies on developing her skills in this new field of vein care.

In 2003, she decided to open an office of her own. Her goal was to develop an office that provided high quality vein care, an office that was patient-centered, an office where patients felt that the Physician and her staff really cared about them as individuals. Having been in Primary Care as an Internist in Raleigh for 16 years, she knew that what patients wanted most was a Doctor who REALLY CARED and who WOULD REALLY LISTEN. Patients were yearning for a Doctor who would take the time to ask about their sick husband, their child struggling to learn to read or their struggle as a caregiver for an elderly parent. She chose a 'tag line' or description for VeinCare: "We care for YOU, not just your veins." If you speak to her patients, they will agree that she lives by this motto each and every day.

Education

At Princeton University, Dr. Smith studied psychology and swam on the varsity swim team. After graduating from Princeton, she attended medical school at the University of Cincinnati.

In 1984, she completed her residency in Internal Medicine at the University of North Carolina, where she became a proud Tar Heel. During her training, Dr. Smith earned the Outstanding Teaching Resident Award and the “I Care” Award.

After finishing her residency, Dr. Smith assumed a position at the Medical Clinic at WakeMed in Raleigh, North Carolina in which she cared for indigent patients in a primary care setting. Two years later, in 1986, she joined Raleigh Internal Medicine, where she practiced primary care for the next 13 years, providing quality care for over 5,000 patients.

Eager to spend more time with her patients, in 1999, she seized the opportunity to make a change to a new field, Phlebology -- the evaluation and treatment of patients with vein disorders -- and opened the Raleigh office for Vein Clinics of America. Dr. Smith valued their superior training program and approached this new field with energy and enthusiasm. A temporary position soon grew into a new passion and career path.
