Physician Profile

Kathryn Bohn, M.D. I first moved to Bloomington-Normal as a student at Illinois State University for both my Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees. I loved this community and after medical school and residency, my husband and I moved here to start our practices and our family. I became very involved at the school our daughter attended by being room mother and Girl Scout leader for years. We were very involved with the PTA & band at our daughter’s school and chaperoned many of the band trips. During my 24 years as an Emergency Department Physician, I served on the Eleventh Judicial Circuit Family Violence Council. I continue to be involved with Illinois State University as an Alumni and as a member of the Illinois State University Foundation Board.

I have served on the Red Cross Board & continue to volunteer with them for their fundraising efforts. Interested in the sub-specialty of Phlebology (vein care), Dr. Bohn completed her Fellow ship training under the direction of Dr. Stephen Rivard. After completing her advanced training, Dr. Bohn opened The VEIN Specialists, in Bloomington/Normal Illinois operated by physicians dedicated exclusively to the state-of the-art treatment of vein disease.

The vein practice has given me more time to be involved in our local community. I continue to volunteer & enjoy attending many of the fund raising events in our community. I also love to travel, shop, attend movies & plays and cheer on the Illinois State University Redbirds at their sporting events.

Thomas Nielsen, M.D. I love this community. My wife, Dr. Bohn and I have been here treating Bloomington patients since 1987. Raising our daughter here has given us an opportunity to become involved in multiple aspects and activities that the community offers. A few examples would include the schools (Band program, athletic programs, chess club), libraries, parks and recreational activities, the children’s museum, Miller Park Zoo and many more.

I decided after 27 years in the Emergency Department that although emergency medicine was very challenging and rewarding, I was looking to transition my medical career into a field of medicine where I could have an ongoing relationship with my patients,” Dr. Nielsen says. This specialty allows me to interact even more with my patients. I feel very passionate about educating the public and my peers regarding vein disease. Any time you would like to ask me a question, please feel free!

I love volunteering and supporting the multiple charities in the community. My hobbies include traveling, flying (with Crosswinds Flying Club), boating and interacting with other members of the local business community.

Richard Castillo, M.D. My wife is an ISU Alumni and always loved this community. When a position became available in 1990 at a local Emergency Department we jumped at the chance. It has been a great place to raise our family. After 24 years of Emergency Medicine I was looking to transition into something that would give me more time with my family and allow me the opportunity for patient follow-up.

Practicing Phlebology allows me the opportunity to get to know my patients better and hear their stories, something I really enjoy. Not only am I given the opportunity to help someone; I am learning something new that helps me on my life journey. This specialty also gives me greater opportunities to spend time with friends and family, truly one of the best gifts anyone could have.

My wife and I have been active in our church and in the school, as well as supporting community and neighborhood events. We enjoy watching our children in swimming, tennis, golf and volunteering as photographer for various school events. Some of my other interests include mission work, golf, skiing, and going to sporting events.

Jonathan Benson, D.O. I graduated from the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences and completed my clinical training in Philadelphia, PA. In 2009 I moved to Bloomington to begin a residency in Family Medicine at Advocate Bromenn which I completed in 2012. During my training as a general practitioner (in Family Medicine), I found myself drawn to the focused nature of phlebology (vein care) and the treatment of venous disease when I met the physicians at The Vein Specialists. I began learning with them in 2012 toward the end of my Family Medicine residency with the goal of formal training for a career in phlebology. I completed a training program in Advanced Vein Care and Treatment with The Vein Specialists, LLC” in 2013, while continuing to work as a Hospitalist in both Bloomington and Quincy, IL.

The relaxed atmosphere and ample time for patient care that phlebology offers certainly appeals to me, while remaining stimulating and challenging with an emphasis on hand-eye coordination. While I do still enjoy the diverse and complicated cases of hospitalist medicine, I especially enjoy the smaller patient population and longer relationships I have found in vein care. I love to see the tangible and significant therapeutic benefit which is often seen even early in treatment. Phlebology is a young and emerging field of medical science, and I’m fascinated and excited to be involved at this stage and with this practice.

In my spare time I appreciate art, literature, fishing, and international travel. I also continue to care for hospital patients on a part-time basis to keep in practice with general medicine (Family Medicine). At the Vein Specialists I have found my home. The compassionate and competent staff and physicians continuously nurture a philosophy of exceptional care for patients and their families. The values here are driven toward continual improvement and attention to all of the patient’s needs and questions, a perfect environment for healing.

Services Provided

Treatment Plan Over the past few years, the treatments for vein disorders have changed dramatically. New technology has virtually eliminated the need to use surgery for the treatment of varicose veins. Non-surgical laser treatments allow for fast, virtually pain-free treatments requiring minimal recovery time.

Prior to any vein treatments, each patient will receive a thorough medical evaluation to identify the underlying cause(s) of the vein problems. Drs. Bohn and Nielsen will discuss treatment options for your condition which may include sclerotherapy, laser treatment or microsurgery. The best treatment option for you will depend upon the conditions and extent of vein disease, your overall health, risk factors, insurance coverage and your preference.

The Vein Specialists offers a wide variety of vein treatments for spider veins and varicose veins in Bloomington, Illinois.
