General Information

At Vein Associates of Edina, our practice is limited to the diagnosis and treatment of  "medically necessary" vein disease.  This is why your insurance plan covers all or some of the cost of treatment.  Appropriate referrals to qualified practitioners are provided for the treatment of "cosmetic" veins.  Many patients ask, "Do my veins require treatment?" and "What treatment is best for me?" Veins that cause leg pain, swelling, blood clots, bleeding or skin discoloration or sores are prime candidates for treatment.  Each patient's individual treatment plan is created based on the results of their standing ultrasound exam. Most insurance plans cover the cost of the ultrasound exam.  So schedule you consultation today! Vein Associates of Edina offers patient financing through Care Credit, Capital One Healthcare Financing and Chase Health Advance.

Services Provided

Using the newest and most advanced techniques available, Vein Associates of Edina can eliminate your unsightly and unhealthy varicose veins without the pain and scarring associated with hospital based surgery.  However, if surgical stripping is in your best medical interest, Dr. Reese has the qualifications, and the hospital priviledges to perform this procedure if deemed necessary.  The following is a summary of the procedures performed at Vein Associates of Edina. Varicose Veins Conservative Treatment: Dr. Reese prescribes special support stockings to the patient. This helps slow down the growth and development of varicose veins. Although this is not a permanent cure, it provides symptomatic relief.

Sclerotherapy: A solution is injected into the diseased veins. This causes the veins to shrink, close and eventually disappear. Dr. Reese’s patients have benefited immensely from this safe, effective and non-aesthetic solution. However, for patients with larger varicosities an ultrasound is used to identify the right spots in the underlying vessels where the solution has to be injected. This allows precise, safe and accurate medical relief for long lasting and superior results.

Endovenous Laser Ablation: In this treatment, Dr. Reese inserts a laser fiber into the vein via a needle. Heat energy, delivered through the laser, causes shrinking and eventual closing of the vein. This fiber is used in the treatment of the larger saphenous vein below the surface of the skin. This vein is usually the prime cause of bulging veins on the leg’s surface.

Ambulatory Phlebectomy micro-extraction: Dr. Reese uses this procedure to remove large surface varicosities by means of small incisions without stitches. Via this procedure, Dr. Reese pulls up the vein and removes it delicately. The patient has to wear a compression hose and a bandage for several days to minimize discomfort and swelling.
Spider Veins Spider veins commonly appear on the face and legs. These are dilated and tiny blood vessels seen as bundles of small blue or red veins near the skin’s surface. The location of these veins gives them a dark and prominent appearance. They can be branch-shaped, spider-shaped or can be short and thin jagged lines.

After Common effects associated with spider veins are minor pain, aches and itching; all of which are not health hazards. Spider veins are largely a cosmetic problem. Many women stop wearing skirts or shorts due to the bruised appearance and embarrassment caused by spider veins.

Spider veins are caused by veins which become swollen and dilated with stagnant blood. This may be due to hereditary factors, prolonged standing or sitting, or even pregnancy. Changes in the hormonal levels during pregnancy can lead to poor blood circulation. This can cause the growth of spider veins.

Dr. Reese's colleagues use Sclerotherapy to treat spider veins. During the treatment, the vein is injected with a solution and blood is then re-directed into healthy veins around the affected area. Eventually these veins shrink, close and disappear slowly. Dr. Reese’s patients continue to commend his treatment and medication as both effective and safe. There is no anesthetic used either!

Although the tiniest veins might disappear soon, some veins may take on a darker appearance causing a worse appearance. As the veins start to close down, blood gets trapped and causes the bruised appearance. While this is expected, Dr. Reese emphasizes that this will be solved in subsequent sessions. With spider veins, the results are never immediate. It may take as much as eight weeks to see a realistic level of improvement (70-80%). Large veins may take a few weeks to improve.
