Endovenous Laser Treatment
Endovenous laser treatment (EVLT) has virtually replaced the old fashioned
vein stripping surgery for varicose veins. This high-tech procedure delivers laser light energy to the inside wall of the large varicose vein in the leg by means of a tiny fiberoptic laser fiber inserted through an I.V. needle. It’s quick, done with local anesthesia, and you can return to regular activities right after the procedure. Dr. Presant was one of the first few vein specialists in the U.S.A. performing the procedure in the spring of 2001. Since then, the results have continued to be excellent. In our experience, patients have had minimal discomfort or bruising afterwards.
Phlebectomy
Ambulatory phlebectomy is an in-office microsurgical procedure that removes the larger varicose veins of the legs, using local anesthesia, with minute 2mm (one sixteenth of an inch) incisions. The tiny openings are closed with a sterile tape, leaving virtually invisible scars. There is no down time and most normal activities can be resumed right away. A bandage and compression stocking is worn for a short time. Less than 2% of our patients reported taking anything for pain afterwards. The dilated, diseased veins removed are of little use and are not needed. The procedure takes from one to two hours to perform and is commonly done in stages. Any bruising that occurs is very slight. The cosmetic result is excellent.
Duplex Ultrasound Guided Sclerotherapy
Also referred to as duplex guided chemical ablation, this is a highly specialized method of closing incompetent, refluxing veins that are not visible on the surface.
The diseased vein is first visualized on ultrasound and a needle is guided into the vein with ultrasound imaging. The skill and precision required enables treatment of veins that would otherwise necessitate surgery. It is quick to perform and allows immediate return to normal activity.
