Physicians' Background

Bay Area Interventional Radiology Doctors (BAIR):

BAIR is managed by Juan C. Esteva, MD and Kok L. Chong, MD; two highly-skilled, Diagnostic Radiologists certified by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) with a Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Interventional Radiology. Each has a wealth of experience having performed thousands of interventional procedures over the past 6 and 7 years, respectively.

We are committed to providing excellent care and the highest quality of service to our patients while employing advanced techniques traditionally used in hospitals in a comfortable and convenient outpatient environment.

Dr. Kok L. Chong: A graduate of Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, Dr Chong completed his medical education at the New York Medical College, Westchester, NY. He served as a general surgery intern at the University of California, San Francisco after which he completed his four year Diagnostic Radiology Residency at the LA County/University of Southern California Medical Center. Dr. Chong then completed his training with a Subspecialty Fellowship in Vascular and Interventional Radiology at the Indiana University in Indianapolis, Indiana after which he returned to settle in San Francisco.

Presently, Dr. Chong is a member of the Society of Interventional Radiology, American College of Radiology and the Radiological Society of North America.

Dr. Juan C. Esteva: A graduate of St Joseph's University in Philadelphia, PA, Dr. Esteva completed his medical education at Ponce School of Medicine in Ponce, PR. This was followed by Diagnostic Radiology Residency training at LA County/USC Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA. He then attended MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX for a Subspecialty Fellowship in Vascular and Interventional Radiology before returning to California to settle in the SF Bay Area.

A fellowship trained board certified Interventional Radiologist, Dr. Esteva is trained in the latest techniques, and has successfully performed most minimally invasive image-guided diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

Dr. Esteva is an active member of the Society of Interventional Radiology, the American College of Radiology, and the Radiological Society of North America.

Venous Insufficiency (Varicose Veins):

Veins are vessels in the body that return blood from the arms, legs, and organs back to the heart. Venous insufficiency occurs when the flow of blood through the veins is impaired. It can be congenital, degenerative (old age), occupational, or caused by damage to the valves of the veins such as from prior blood clots. This causes venous blood reflux and venous stasis leading to varicose and spider veins. Symptoms can be uncomfortable and include skin irritation, pain, skin ulcerations, or venous thrombophlebitis (inflammation) among others. Certain forms of venous insufficiency can be treated easily, quickly, and painlessly with great results. Give us a call to set up a no cost initial consultation.

What are the causes of venous insufficiency?
Healthy veins have a continuous flow of blood from the limbs back to the heart. There are valves within the veins of the legs that prevent the backflow of blood. Venous insufficiency occurs when the forward flow through the veins is obstructed, as in the case of a blood clot, or if there is backward leakage of blood flow through damaged valves. In many cases of venous insufficiency, patients have both obstruction of forward flow and backward leakage of the veins.

BAIR Provides:

* Diagnosis
