Veins are designed to carry blood from the legs back to the heart. Varicose veins are abnormal veins with incompetent valves that vary in size from small spider veins up to large bulging varicose veins. Spider veins commonly occur on the legs, face, and other areas. Varicose veins occur in the legs. They can present as bulging, cordlike, twisted, soft, blue-to-purple swellings on the leg anywhere from the groin to the ankle. Common symptoms include aching, leg fatigue and heaviness, itching, throbbing, night cramps, restless legs, and ankle swelling. Conservative measures such as walking, gradient compression stockings, and leg elevation may temporarily improve these symptoms.
After a consultation, physical examination, and a duplex ultrasound, Dr. Caggiano will help you decide what form of treatment is best. Laser Vein Care uses a state-of-the-art vascular ultrasound to fully evaluate and examine the veins in patients.
ENDOVENOUS LASER ABLATION
Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) uses targeted laser energy to close the vein shut and helps in making you look and feel better fast. The benefits of the procedure are relief from heaviness in the legs, in addition to an overall wellness of being. The procedure takes approximately 45 minutes with a local anesthetic and is performed on an outpatient procedure basis. EVLA has proven to be highly effective for the treatment of venous reflux disease with a reported 95-97% success rate at 12 months follow-up.
Using the laser to collapse very fine spider veins on any area of the body is a simple noninvasive outpatient procedure. For sensitive areas, a topical anesthetic is used.
Sclerotherapy and Ultrasound-Guided Chemical Ablation are common treatments for both varicose and spider veins. A solution is injected into the vein that causes the vein walls to swell, stick together, and seal shut.
Ambulatory Microphlebectomy is a method of removing varicose veins on the surface of the legs. This procedure is performed in the office under local anesthesia. Tiny incisions (1-2mm) are used to remove the diseased veins. The incisions are so small that no stitches are required, and patients are able to walk following the procedure.
