Leg Vein

Updated on: August 18, 2014

Leg vein is a term commonly used to describe the unsightly veins which occur on the legs. Most women complain that the "leg vein" started to appear after their first pregnancy. Others notice that the leg vein becomes more prominent after standing for long periods.

Leg veins is a term used to denote the presence of either varicose or spider veins. These leg veins occur because of the increased pressure in the veins which leads to formation of varicose and spider veins.

Leg veins are more common in women and it is estimated that more than 30 million individuals in North America have some degree of these unattractive veins.

If not treated, the leg veins continue to progress and may eventually cause symptoms of leg swelling and aches.

There are several treatment options for leg veins. For the spider veins, there is laser and sclerotherapy and for varicose veins there are several more options. The newer methods of treating varicose veins require no incision, are less painful and have little downtime.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for leg veins and with all treatments; some degree of recurrence is inevitable in the future. To prevent recurrence of leg veins, daily wearing of compression stockings is highly recommended
