Prevention of Lymphedema

Unfortunately, it is hard to know who is going to develop lymphedema. However, for those who have already developed the condition, there are several measures one can take to prevent worsening of the condition. These include:

Protect your extremity: Because the skin is very prone to infection, all trauma should be avoided. Even a small abrasion can cause skin infection in lymphedema. All cuts, bruises, lacerations, blood draws and even measurement of blood pressure should be avoided from the extremity

Rest your arm or leg when not active. To relieve the swelling even to some degree, it is important to elevate the leg or arm at rest.

Avoid heat on your arm or leg: Because the skin in lymphedema is very sensitive to trauma, one should never apply any heat or warm compress on the extremity. Any exposure to heat or high temperatures even from a shower can cause skin damage.



Tight clothing:
Because of the swelling in the extremity, one should not wear tight clothing. Any constricting clothing can cause trauma to the skin. One should not even place a blood pressure cuff on the arm.

Keep your arm or leg clean. Because the skin is very prone to infection, one should always keep the skin clean and dry. All skin breaks should be avoided. Do not apply any creams or ointments and do not rub the skin.



Compression stockings:
Wear compressions stocking regularly. The stocking should be of moderate compression gradient and the right size should be selected to avoid constriction of the skin. The stockings should be worn all day and can be removed at night. Unfortunately, wearing of compression hoses is a life long event. The importance of stockings can not be emphasized enough. With time, the leg swelling will reduce and a definite reduction in size of the leg can occur. This may take up to 6-12 months.
