For this procedure, the area of the leg that is affected will be anesthetized with a local anesthetic. Then, your surgeon will take a slender laser fiber that will be inserted through tiny incisions into the damaged vein, delivering laser energy in short pulses.

These laser pulses will close off the vein preventing any future blood flow. Your body will automatically choose other healthy veins to send blood back to the heart. Once this has been accomplished, the fiber-optic probe will be removed.

There is minimal discomfort during the procedure and you should be able to resume your normal activity the next day.

Once the fiber-optic tube has been removed, a compression stocking will be placed on your leg and must be worn for at least 1 week. It is advised that you get up and walk as soon as your procedure is completed. Normal activity can be resumed within 24 hours; however, strenuous activity or working out in a gym should be avoided.

After your procedure you may experience some minor bruising and soreness that can last from 7-10 days. You can take over-the-counter non-aspirin oral pain relievers if needed.
