Atlanta Varicose Veins

Updated on: August 18, 2014

In the last decade, the options of treating varicose veins have increased. Today, more minimally invasive procedures are available to treat varicose veins. These newer procedures require minimal anesthesia, are done as an out patient procedure which takes less than 30-45 minutes and have little downtime. The present day choices for the treatment of varicose veins in Atlanta include:

Compression stockings: while these stockings do not cure varicose veins, they can help prevent worsening of the symptoms. However, for those who decide on stockings, they must be worn daily for a long time. Compression stockings are generally the first treatment of choice in those who are seeking a non surgical solution. For those who can bear the initial tightness and heat, stockings are an excellent treatment choice.

Ambulatory phlebectomy: There are some individuals who have a few isolated varicose veins which appear on the skin. They may be tender and do swell at the end of the day. For these individuals, phlebectomy is an excellent procedure. The surgery does require anesthesia and a small incision is made over each varicose vein. Using special instruments, the entire clump of varicose veins is then removed. The procedure does require multiple incisions and recurrence can be a problem if the procedure is not done correctly.

Vein stripping: Most vascular and general surgeons in Atlanta are adept at stripping the varicose vein. The procedure entails removal of the entire varicose vein from the ankle to the groin. It is an older procedure and best recommended for those with involvement of the entire leg. After surgery, one has to take at least 5-7 days off and there is moderate bruising which resolves in a 1-2 weeks.

Minimally invasive: Today there is a procedure which utilizes ultrasound and the use of laser or radiofrequency ablation to destroy the varicose vein. The procedure is done as an outpatient and only requires a small incision in the thigh. The laser probe is inserted in the varicose vein and the vein is literally burnt away. These minimally invasive procedures known as EVLT or Closure are done in a number of cosmetic clinics in Atlanta.

Can varicose veins be permanently cured?

No, there is no cure for varicose veins and none of these procedures can permanently erase varicosities. Recurrences though rare, can and does occur when the procedure is not done correctly. The best cure for varicose veins is to prevent them in the first place.
