Are You Aware of the Things That Can Cause a Spider Vein?

Updated on: August 18, 2014

Without skin, the body would be in serious trouble. After all, skin is what protects the internal organs from the outside elements. As a person ages, it only makes sense that the skin ages too. However, there are some things that can appear on the skin that can actually be prevented.

Take, for example, the appearance of a spider vein. While this kind of vein can appear on the face of a person, it usually shows up on the upper thighs or the calves. This vein is small, scraggly, and red in color. If a person needed a visual of something to compare it to, then it would be most like the way roads are depicted on a map.

While a spider vein usually appears in middle-aged-to-older people, it can start showing up as early as a person's late twenties. For example, if a woman starts putting on a rapid amount of weight because of pregnancy, that puts pressure on the veins in her legs. The veins start to collect pooled blood, and the result is a spider vein.

Yes, men can get these kinds of veins too, but it is more common for them to appear in women. However, if a man is in the habit of lifting weights, he is at more of a risk of getting this kind of vein because of the subsequent strain. A spider vein poses more of a cosmetic annoyance than anything else, but it can be cured via sclerotherapy, which involves medicinal injections.
