Spider Veins: Are They Something to be Concerned About?

It only makes sense that as a body ages, some irregularities start to surface, especially on the legs. In the old days, when a women found an irregularity on her legs she was either too busy to really think much about it, or not very concerned because the legs were covered by long skirt anyway. However, now short skirts and short shorts are part of everyday fashion.

So, when a fashionable, health conscious woman sees spider veins on her legs, chances are that she wants to do something about them. Spider veins are instantly recognizable in that they are scraggly, thin veins that are red or reddish purple in color. They usually appear on the upper thighs, but can also sometimes be found on the lower legs.

In order to find the most effective way to treat spider veins, it is important to first understand how they are caused. This way, when the treatment is sought out and the problematic veins are fixed, the woman knows how to prevent these kinds of veins from happening again.

Obesity is one of the main causes of these kinds of veins. Simply put, when a woman gains a lot of weight, she is putting an excess amount of pressure on her legs. After all, the legs carry the majority of the body weight. The legs are also a network of veins for the purpose of circulation.

So, when a woman is carrying around an excess amount of weight, the pressure that this weight places on her legs slows down the circulation in the veins there. So, in an effort to make the circulation optimal again, certain veins will swell beyond their usual capacity. It is this swelling that makes the veins visible.

If a woman has developed these kinds of veins because of basic obesity, then she should start eating healthy food and exercising on a regular basis. If the woman has gained weight because of the normal weight gain that is associated with pregnancy, then she should be sure to rest her legs by propping them up on a footstool for about fifteen minutes a day, and also by wearing the right footwear.

Whether a woman is pregnant or not, it is very important that she wear the right footwear if she knows that she is going to be walking or standing for a long period of time. This means that high heels, although they might look really nice, are actually not good for the legs.

Additionally, exercise can cause these kinds of veins if the woman is not wearing the right sneakers. Too often, women think that any kind of sneaker (tennis sneakers included) would be fine for power walking or jogging. Wrong! Instead, it is best for the woman to wear athletic sneakers with gel soles.

Spider veins can be treated through either sclerotherapy (which are medicinal injections) or laser treatments, with sclerotherapy taking precedence. Although these kinds of veins might look awful, they are usually more of a cosmetic annoyance. However, if the woman notices that her legs are also stiff and achy, it is important to have the veins immediately checked by her doctor.
