The Key in Varicose Vein Treatment is Learning the Proper Prevention

Updated on: August 18, 2014

When a person is in junior high and high school, they usually take a health class. In that health class, one of the topics will probably be about the circulation process. Unfortunately, unless some people in that class intend on becoming a cardiologist, they generally do not pay much attention. It is important to be properly informed about this topic, because circulation can lead to many different health, as well as cosmetic, problems.

Take, for example, the situation of a woman who has been told that she is now in need of varicose vein treatment. Most likely she was going about her regular business, not really paying attention, then one day, either when she went to shave her legs or was wearing shorts she looked down and noticed that a varicose vein had appeared on her leg.

Usually, this kind of vein only requires varicose vein treatment for cosmetic purposes. This, of course, is understandable, because no woman wants to look down and see a puffy, bluish, purplish, or greenish vein roughly resembling a caterpillar on their leg. But sometimes varicose vein treatment reveals that the presence of such a vein indicates other medical problems.

For example, if the vein is especially swollen and painful, and accompanied by a rash, then it must be attended to as soon as possible, because otherwise the rash and the vein could ulcerate. Additionally, if the leg on which the vein is located is especially stiff and painful, then that is an indication that a clot could be present.

In order to really understand how varicose vein treatment can fix this kind of vein, it is important to know how these kinds of veins are caused. Although men can sometimes get these kinds of veins as well, it is more likely for women. Whenever excess pressure is put on the leg veins for an extended period of time, the veins will swell in order to allow more blood to pass through.

As for what can cause this swelling, gaining an excess amount of weight n a short amount of time is one of the main causes. For example, women might notice this kind of vein appearing during or after a pregnancy. It is important for a pregnant woman to avoid wearing heels, and instead wear shoes that have the proper support. Additionally, to improve circulation during pregnancy, the woman should spend about fifteen minutes a day relaxing with her feet and legs elevated.

Conversely, women who experience these kinds of veins because of significant weight gain should make sure that they spend a half hour a day or more walking in order to improve circulation and lose weight. Of course, the woman should also eat a healthy diet.

When discussing the kinds of treatment that are available for these kinds of veins, there are two man ones. The first method, which is known as sclerotherapy, is used for less severe veins. Basically, they are medicinal injections that are designed to improve blood flow, thus collapsing the vein. Laser therapy is used more often to the same effect.
