Initially there were only compression stockings for the prevention of blood clots in the leg. Today, we now have a variety of small mechanical devices which can mimic the actions of compression stockings. These devices have been used in hospitals for many years for the prevention of blood clots in the leg. These devices can even be combined with compression stockings.
Jobst 7500 is a sequential extremity pump. This mechanical device consists of a set of inflatable blood pressure cuffs which are placed on the calf and thigh. The device works by first activating the cuffs in the calf followed by compression of the thigh cuffs. The sequential compression mimics squeezing of the leg muscles and drives the blood forward. By working in a sequential fashion, the device improves circulation in the leg and prevents blood from pooling in the leg. The machine is excellent for the prevention of blood clots and also for the treatment of lymphedema. The devices can be used day and night in the individual who is bed ridden. For those with lymphedema, nightly use is recommended.
The initial devices were only available for hospital use, but today, smaller portable devices are also available for home use.
The cost of Jobst 7500 sequential pump averages about $1000 and above.
