Minimally-Invasive Endovenous Laser Ablation Treats Varicose Veins

Updated on: August 18, 2014

Those in the Boulder, Colorado area, as well as in other parts of the country, who are experiencing varicose veins may find relief in endovenous laser ablation. This is a minimally-invasive procedure that has helped patients throughout the community and around the country overcome the embarrassing appearance and often painful symptoms of varicose veins. The procedure is typically performed in a physician's office or a clinic and takes about a half an hour to an hour to perform. Endovenous laser ablation may provide a reduce risk of stasis ulcers; significant relief from aches, heaviness and pain; more efficient blood circulation; an improved body image; and is a quick and easy treatment option.

Endovenous laser ablation involves the insertion of a laser fiber into the problem vein that is bulgy, painful or unattractive. The laser fiber is heated using low energy, which damages the vein and causes it to collapse and shrink. Eventually, it disappears entirely, providing patients with relief from the unsightliness associated with the condition. Veins that are destroyed using this or other procedures may be harmful to circulation, and their removal is often helpful in improving circulation. Healthy veins should not be harmed, however, as they are effective in carrying blood away from the legs and back to the heart. What's more, a healthy greater saphenous vein may be needed one day in a future open heart surgery, so it should not be removed if healthy.

Patients should wear protective eye goggles throughout the treatment process to help avoid unplanned exposure to the laser light. A topical anesthetic is used to ensure the patient's comfort throughout the procedure. Once the treatment area has been numbed with the topical anesthetic, the specialist will insert the laser fiber into the problem vein, verifying its position using ultrasound technology. Next, the fiber is slowly heated using low energy to destroy the vein. With the vein fibrosed and unable to carry blood, other veins in the area will carry out blood flow. This procedure is relatively painless and takes only 30 to 60 minutes to perform on most occasions. Patients may be allowed to go home after about an hour.

Following treatment, a small dressing is applied and a compression bandage is worn for about a week. There are no scars left behind and only minimal post-operative pain is associated with this procedure. Any minor soreness or bruising may be treated using over-the-counter medicine, but patients should consult their doctor before taking any medication to ensure that it is safe to do so. Patients should walk after the procedure and resume normal activities, but should follow any recovery guidelines given to them by their doctor.

As with most procedures, there are certain risks that have been associated with endovenous laser ablation. These may include mild numbness around the thigh, a pulling sensation, phlebitis, deep venous thrombosis and infection at the incision site. Bruising is common following treatment, but this typically resolves after about a week. Other complications that involve the incorrect application of treatment or mistakes made during the procedure may be possible as well, which is why patients should seek treatment only from a qualified, well-trained specialist in the Boulder area.

If used to treat varicose veins that are considered of a medical concern, endovenous laser ablation may be covered by insurance. However, if used for cosmetic purposes only, insurance may not cover treatment. Patients may be required to go through a trial period of compression stockings and pain medication before insurance companies may cover the cost of treatment, however. Those interested should speak with a specialist in Boulder and their insurance company for further information.
