VNUS for Patients with Varicose Veins

Updated on: August 18, 2014

Varicose veins are problematic for those suffering from them in the Fairfield, Ohio area. Many patients feel pain and heaviness in the legs, and a lot of patients are self-conscious of the appearance of their veins. Those who are experiencing this condition should speak with a vein specialist in their area to discuss possible treatment options. One of the treatments that has brought relief to many patients is VNUS. This procedure involves the use of radiofrequency energy that is delivered to the vein wall, which leads to its collapse and closure.

VNUS is performed on an outpatient basis, making it more convenient than some of the traditional vein stripping or ligation procedures. Ultrasound technology is used to give the specialist visualization of the procedure. The leg will first be cleaned with an antiseptic, and the local anesthetic is injected in the thigh above the knee. A small needle is then placed in the vein and a catheter is guided through it. Radiofrequency energy is then applied through the catheter, and it is withdrawn. This energy heats the vein, which causes it to collapse.

A bandage will be placed over the treatment area following the procedure, and compression may be required to make sure the treatment site stays clean after treatment. Patients are typically allowed to walk around and resume normal activities after the procedure. Most are encouraged to avoid sports or heavy lifting for about a week after the procedure, however. Patients may notice that their symptoms include after a couple of weeks, and the cosmetic appearance of the varicose veins typically improves after a few months. Some patients might experience bruising, scarring, or swelling after the treatment, but these typically go away after a couple of weeks.

Some potential risks and complications to watch out for include vessel perforation, thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, phlebitis, hematoma, infection, numbness, tingling, and skin burn. Those who experience these symptoms should contact their doctor. In that vein, before receiving treatment, patients should make sure they are a good candidate for the procedure by consulting with a vein specialist in Fairfield. VNUS is usually used to treat larger varicose veins. Individuals with smaller veins might be referred to other possible treatment options.

Insurance may cover the cost of treatment if the patient suffers from symptoms of varicose veins. If used for cosmetic purposes, though, insurance may not cover the costs. The insurance companies may require that the patient first give compression stockings, exercise and/or weight loss a try before they will cover VNUS or other procedures. This is to determine if these conservative treatments are effective in providing relief. Note, though, that these only relieve symptoms, and the only way to get rid of varicose veins is to destroy or remove them.
