Harnessing the Power of the Electronic Collective

In this issue, VEIN Magazine invites you to open your mind to the possibilities that the Electronic Collective can bring.

Social Media - Great Minds Think Alike

By now, it is safe to assume that we have all been touched by some form of social media. Whether you choose to participate or not, you have to admit that there is a frightening amount of power in numbers. Harnessing the power of those numbers can come in many different forms.

Like many of you, I’ve been invited to connect (more often than I care to acknowledge) with friends, colleagues and strangers alike who use LinkedIn and Facebook religiously. And more recently, I signed up for Groupon and LivingSocial, just to see what kinds of deals I might get. I’m not sure I’m up for trapeze lessons quite yet, even if they are 60% off the usual rate. However, as we’ve seen thus far, we have only begun to scratch the surface of the marketing capabilities of social media. I’m fascinated by the way that the Electronic Collective – in this case, the end user – can take advantage of a group discount in such an innovative way. To understand it better, we look to Andrea Eliscu’s article on the basics of using social media to grow your practice. And on that note, you’ll most likely find the article about pay-per-call marketing enlightening as well.

Crowdsourcing - Two Heads Are Better Than One

I used to worry that spending so much time in front of the computer and the gaming console would isolate the members of our society, severing the threads that hold our relationships together and undermining the collaborative efforts that built up this great country in the first place. Now it seems that the very same technologies that could potentially pull us apart are those that have stimulated some of the most innovative and groundbreaking problem solving we could imagine. A great example of this is a recent phenomenon called crowdsourcing. Jeff Mongelli’s article about the possibilities of using crowdsourcing in the area of EMR s touches upon this new way of utilizing the Electronic Collective – this time, with gamers – to solve some of the toughest scientific challenges we’ve faced yet.
