Veinwave Treatment for Spider Veins

Updated on: November 28, 2018

Veinwave treatment uses thermocoagulation to safely and effectively treat spider veins (telangiectasia) on the face and body. The procedure was developed by vascular surgeons to treat small spider veins that cannot be treated with sclerotherapy injections.

Veinwave therapy may be used for small spider veins on the nose, face, ankles, legs and other areas. The Veinwave procedure uses thermocoagulation to heat and close spider veins instantly. Treatment takes less than 15 minutes to perform and has no downtime.

Is Veinwave right for you?

A good candidate for Veinwave treatment is any adult in good general health who has small spider veins—the tangled, thread-like veins called telangiectasia. Veinwave is ideally suited to treat spider veins wherever they may occur, including delicate areas where other treatments may not be suitable. Veinwave therapy may be used on many areas, including:

  • Legs
  • Arms
  • Ankles
  • Knees
  • Face
  • Nose

Veinwave treatment is not recommended if you have the following conditions:

  • Epilepsy
  • Bleeding disorders
  • Have a pacemaker
  • Are pregnant

How is Veinwave treatment performed?

After cleaning the injection site, your doctor will insert a very fine, insulated needle into your skin right next to the spider vein. No numbing cream or anesthesia is required. The needle precisely heats and destroys the spider vein without damaging nearby tissue. Most procedures take between 10 and 15 minutes to perform, and no bandages are required following the procedure.

Because the Veinwave procedure uses a very fine needle, most patients don't experience pain during the procedure, though some report a feeling similar to a brief pin-prick.

Many people only need one treatment, but in some cases two or three treatments may be required for best results.

There is a very small risk of scarring, although this risk is less compared to other spider vein treatments such as sclerotherapy.

What is the recovery like?

Vewinwave is a quick procedure with no downtime. You can resume your normal activities immediately after treatment. No bandages are required.

You may have temporary redness or cat-scratch like marks along the treated spider veins, but this will fade in about two weeks. Most people return to work and other normal activities immediately after their procedure.

When will I begin to see results?

With the Veinwave system, you will see results immediately following your treatment, as the spider veins are closed immediately. Your results will continue to improve over the next few days following your procedure as any redness or temporary marks fade away.

Treatment of spider veins with the Veinwave system is permanent. Once your veins are treated successfully with the Veinwave system, you will no longer be bothered by them.

What are the advantages of Veinwave over other procedures?

Veinwave offers many advantages over other procedures used to treat spider veins and telangiectasia, including:

  • Almost no pain
  • No bruising
  • No downtime
  • Can treat sensitive areas like the face
  • High degree of safety
  • Faster than other spider vein treatments

Veinwave cost and insurance coverage

Veinwave treatment cost will vary based on the extent of the area being treated, but generally will range from $400 to $800 per session.

Most insurance companies consider spider vein treatments to be cosmetic and do not offer coverage. In some cases, however, spider vein procedures may be covered, especially when they occur alongside other venous conditions like problematic varicose veins. Be sure to contact your insurance company directly to see whether or not your procedure will be covered.
