A vein surgeon found 5 areas of my leg that require treatment, but he plans to treat them one at a time. Is he trying to cheat me?

I visited a doctor today and he found five areas (mostly on the same vein) of my leg that require treatment. He wants to treat each area one at a time, which would mean 5 separate surgeries. It appears that he wants to schedule as many surgeries as possible because that would increase my tab. Is he trying to cheat me?

That depends on the location of the veins. When treating one, it may obscure visualization of the next one, which limits proper access. Also, there is a chance for lidocaine toxicity if too much was used in a given day. If you have reservations about the practice, you should get a second opinion elsewhere. This may help you feel good about your diagnosis, as some practices may lack in integrity.

Depends on the type of treatment he wants to do separately. Usually, an ablation of a large saphenous vein is done first, and each ablation is separate. If it is ambulatory phlebectomy, then usually it is combined with sclerotherapy for the most effective treatment. Without knowing all the details I cannot say directly, but I will say that in treating varicose veins, you should have a physician who is accredited and recommended by the American College of Phlebology.

It is not uncommon to require several sessions of treatments per leg. For example, if the great and small saphenous veins reflux and require treating then each is treated separately. If varicose veins are also present then they may be treated at a separate time and if spider veins are also present, then these will be treated separately. If you were told that you need 5 CLOSURE procedures in one leg then I would be very skeptical of the recommendations. See a vein specialist if another opinion is required.
