Are bruises and lumps normal two weeks after vein stripping surgery?

I had my right leg stripped of veins in a clinic in Switzerland two weeks ago. It is very bruised and lumpy. Is this normal?

Bruising can be normal post vein treatment. What you call "lumpy" could be treated veins that feel firm until absorbed by your body.

Two weeks after treatment it is probably normal and should resolve with time.

Yes it is normal. It is difficult to get the whole vein out, so parts of the vein will remain and clot. It can be sore, bruised, and lumpy. Those clots are not a health risk, they are just lumpy and sometimes painful.

Yes, the bruising and lumpiness is normal after vein stripping surgeries. This will tend to resolve with time. Luckily, in the United States there are newer minimally invasive options that make the likelihood very low that patients will require stripping surgery.

If the veins were actually stripped (from the groin to the knee through two incisions) or removed through multiple small incisions (called microphlebectomy), there is often some residual bruising and lumps in the
region of the incision or between the incisions, which may take weeks to months to completely resolve. Use anti-inflammatory medications and warm soaks to expedite your recovery.

You do not clarify if you had a saphenous vein stripping or ambulatory phlebectomy of varicosities. In general, bruises and lumps arise from trapped blood or small retained vein segments along the course of the removed vein. The body usually reabsorbs these slowly, but occasionally collected blood can be drained with a tiny puncture by the physician to speed healing and discomfort. You should see a vein specialist for follow-up evaluation.

Bruising and lumps are very common post stripping, closure procedures and microphlebectomies. The bruising is due to bleeding from the treated veins under the skin and the lumps are due to trapped blood within the treated veins. Wet, warm compresses to the area, compression and ibuprofen will help.
