I had EVLT procedure done about six years ago. Everything was fine up until recently when I started to do heavy weight training exercises with my trainer. I've noticed that my varicose veins started showing again and the so called "nurses vein" became a problem. Should I stop weight training?
If there was any venous insufficiency caused by the weight training, stopping will not likely help. It's more likely that you have a new vein with valvular failure. A venous consultation to see what is going on is probably the best option.

Return to the physician and get a recheck, as well as an additional ultrasound.

Stop the weight training and see a vein treatment specialist. You probably did not completely close the vein that was treated and it has opened up completely which results in the incompetence in the vein and causes more veins to appear. Weight training causes this to develop rapidly, so stop the training until you see a specialist.

Extreme heavy weight lifting is not the best for your veins once you know you have the tendency to develop enlarged veins. If you have the tendency to develop leaking valves in your veins, it is not uncommon to have more as time passes. I would recommend that you have an evaluation with an ultrasound to reevaluate how your veins are doing.

There are no long term restrictions.

New varices just mean that you probably have reflux in other veins in your legs and those varices are the visible symptoms of that reflux. A new ultrasound would be beneficial to find out which veins are the problem and which treatment would be best.

No, I wouldn't stop weight training, but I would get my veins reevaluated. You may have involvement of new veins.

I believe that you need a re-evaluation by a vein specialist. Only the full evaluation will help to understand why you have recurrent varicose veins and what can be done to resolve your problem.

No, weight lifting should not cause the veins, though it might bring them out temporarily.

Not necessarily. This far out, effects on veins are independent of the EVLT.

There are no long term restrictions following EVLT. It sounds as if you may have had another valve in some vein open leading to the new varicose veins. You should have a new venous reflux exam. Recurrent varicose veins are usually due to an underlying new reflux problem. As an aside, weight training can increase the intra-abdominal pressure and could lead to valvular insufficiency.

No, there are no longterm post-EVLT restrictions regarding weight training.

Great question. There are some restrictions with regards to lifting heavy weight after an EVLT. Most doctors recommend avoiding any heavy lifting (perhaps 20 lbs or more) for a week or two, and some for up to 6 weeks. I would check with your doctor, but most do not have restrictions after 6 weeks.
