Do I need to have a venous reflux exam before endovenous ablation procedures? I have very obvious varicose veins on one leg, and already know i want to have them treated with ELA.
Absolutely. Your veins, both in the superficial and deep systems, need to be fully evaluated.

Once you have varicose veins you definitely have venous reflux and chronic venous insufficiency. However, a definitive diagnosis is necessary for evaluation and documentation of your disease. The ultrasound exam is comprehensive and involves the evaluation of your deep and superficial systems. Other incidental findings may also be found on the exam. Before treatment can be performed, insurance requires documentation as well to determine the vessel involved, vessel size as well as the amount or reflux in each vein segment. Please do not skip this step. If you have not done so already please start wearing graduated compression socks/stockings.
Good luck with your vein treatments.

A venous reflux should absolutely be done before any varicose vein treatment. The exam should look at both the deep and superficial system of veins and it will also detect any unusual anatomy as well as any vein duplications that may need to be treated. In addition, it will serve as a baseline for any additional treatment if necessary and also as a comparison to a post procedure scan.

Venous reflux exams are very important prior to any vein procedure. Not only will define the severety of the problem, but most important gives a precise information about the antomy and that is crucial at the time of the EVLT procedure.
Besides many insurance companies will not authorize the procedure unless there is a venus exam confirming the presence of reflux.

It is absolutely necessary. It will determine the truncal source of your varicosities. It is the truncal source that is ablated and not the varicosities .

A detailed venous reflux exam is essential to making decisions about exactly what veins to treat. Most of the abnormal veins are not seen on external visual exam and the underlying veins must be evaluated for valvular incompetence, venous thrombosis, or other causes of obstruction.
