Can anyone use Compression Stockings?

I don't have spider or varicose veins (yet), but my feet and lower legs are chronically cold and "fall asleep" giving me a tingly feeling at least three or four times per day. Should I try compression stockings to help improve my circulation?

Before you try compression stockings it would be wise to try to find the cause of your symptoms. The symptoms you describe could be arterial or venous. You should be evaluated by a vascular specialist.

Your symptoms are not typical for venous insufficiency. It would not hurt to try the stockings and it might help the symptoms and give helpful information. Usually, compression stocking are helpful and keep an individual's legs feeling better even in the absence of venous insufficiency. To be safe, I would recommend discussing this with your physician since you may have a different treatable cause.

Generally speaking, wearing medical grade compression stockings is always a good thing for circulation and for one's legs, especially if, by the nature of your occupation or activities, you stand or sit for long periods of time. However, there may well be other causes for the symptoms you have been experiencing, so it may benefit you to be evaluated by your physician, or a vein specialist, to make sure that the stockings are appropriate for you.

That does not sound like a venous issue. I would start by consulting you primary care physician and they can refer you to the proper specialist if necessary.

Almost everyone can benefit from compression hose support. However, it is crucial that the correct hose type and specifications are matched to each patient's needs. Additionally, improper fitting, such as fitting when a leg is swollen, will result in failure of benefit and possible worsening of swelling.
It is also important to be mindful that there are some contra-indications for compression including some degrees of Arterial insufficiency and in some patients with a history of
congestive heart failure.

Most people can benefit from compression stockings, however, you should be evaluated by a medical professional before wearing prescription strength compression garments, as people with arterial insufficiency may have problems.

You can try support stockings and see if they help. Compression stockings require a prescription from a physician and he/she should evaluate your vascular system before giving you the prescription.
