Can sclerotherapy for spider veins cause generalized joint pain?

I had spider vein treatment one week ago above the ankles and behind both knees. I now have general feeling of inflammation in my joints, including my upper body such as fingers and wrists. Wondering if treatment triggered something? No clot sx.

Sclerotherapy does not affect joints.

Yes, sclerotherapy can cause generalized inflammation. The detergent medication used, such as sotradecol or polidoconol, becomes systemic and your body can develop inflammatory response to them. Check with your doctor to see if its safe for you to take aspirin, ibuprofen, and/or tylenol continually for about a week to put a stop to the inflammation. You may even need steroids if those over-the-counter meds don't work.

I have never heard of sclerotherapy causing those kinds of problems, especially if there is no clot. What has your physician said? I don't think that it is related to the treatment, unless you had a clot.

Your symptoms are very unlikely to be related to your recent sclerotherapy. See your primary care physician if you are concerned.

The symptoms you describe are not normal following sclerotherapy. Either your symptoms are not at all related to the sclerotherapy treatment, or you could be having some sort of reaction to the treatment. You should follow up with your treating physician.

This response would be highly unlikely, but you should talk with your sclerotherapy physician to determine which solution was used and have them research if this is a possible reaction. I cannot say that we have seen this in our practice.
