Can you use sclerotherapy to get rid of dark under-eye veins?

I have very dark veins under my eyes and cannot seem to find a doctor who will use sclerotherapy to get rid of them. They either want to do lasers or surgery, which is too expensive! Do you recommend sclerotherapy in the eye area?

No. Injury to the veins may cause a problem with your vision, so I do not recommend sclerotherapy in this area. Laser is helpful, but must be done with caution near the eye.

This is a great question. In our office we use what is called a "vein wave" for treating most facial veins.

Sclerotherapy can be done - and has been quite successful - on reticular veins around the eye. I would recommend you see a vascular surgeon for an assessment and, if appropriate, subsequent treatment.

An ophthalmologist would be the doctor to consult about those types of injections. It is not normally recommended to have injections in the facial region in general, but an eye doctor would be the one to consult with.

We will only inject outside the bony orbital margin for lower risk. I know
of no studies listing adverse effects
from these injections. Within the orbit, try a lightening cream.

We have treated veins around the eyes with both sclerotherapy and laser successfully.
However, sclerotherapy has a much higher risk of complications. We now do laser only. We charged about the same for either treatment. Both methods take a series of treatments for satisfactory results.

In some cases sclerotherapy can produce marvelous results for the "dark
veins of the eye." The key is finding an experienced physician.

Sclerotherapy can be done on veins below the eyes depending on the size and location of the veins. I have been doing this for years with very excellent results. Some precautions do need to be taken when doing this and not all veins can be treated with sclerotherapy.
