Compression Stocking and exercising, especially when jogging long distances?

Is it a good idea/ beneficial to wear compression socks/stockings when exercising? Especially when jogging long distances? I also already have vague signs of some spider veins.

Calf length compression stockings are a good idea during exercise and many believe they recover more rapidly from the exercise if they are wearing compresion.

There are currently studies underway about exercise and compression. Physiologically, your calf/thigh muscles are pumping and circulating blood back to the heart when running. There are exercise compression which we wear and sell in our practice which offer graduated compression but with little or none directly over the calf muscle at the back. There are "theories" that compression aids in the return of blood to the heart during running and speeds up muscle recovery after exercise. Some say it actually increase their speed and energy. As no definitive studies have been done at this time, I would go with how you feel with or without compression.

Absolutely. Ideally you should wear compression stockings all the time, but yes, wear them while you exercise.

Can improve venous return and recovery. No evidence of preventing spiders. Certainly doesn't hurt.

Generally exercise is good for the circulation. Unless you have significant symptoms wearing stockings prophylacticaly are not required.

Compression stockings are not necessary while running regardless of the distance. The function of the compression stockings is to compress the veins to increase the venous return and prevent venous stasis. This same function is done by the calf muscles when you run so there is no need to duplicate it.
