At night I get severe spasms in the top of my foot. I can feel my tendon stretched and have to get up and walk in order to relax it. I have a varicose vein that runs from my thigh down to my mid calf. Is this causing my spasms in my foot?
A vein specialist would need to carefully review your medical history, family history, ultrasound imaging results (or order one), signs and symptoms, and physical examination. Then, it can be decided if the varicose vein is the main issue or if there is an underlying venous insufficiency problem causing your symptoms. Venous insufficiency treatment options are endovenous radiofrequency ablation or VenaSeal, as well as combination treatment with ultrasound-guided sclerotherapy, Varithena, and/or ambulatory phlebectomy, and compression stockings.

While the underlying cause of varicose veins—venous reflux, if present—can increase leg cramping due to poor blood return and pooling in the lower legs, you should be evaluated. Ultrasound examination will determine if reflux (backflow) is present and contributing to varicose veins. A trial of medical-grade compression hose will also be used to determine if the cramping improves with improved blood return.

Varicose veins often come from muscle cramping and may be relieved by proper treatment. Examination by a phlebologist can help decide whether this is appropriate in your case.

It may, and further testing is necessary to determine for certain.

The spasms likely have nothing to do with your vein problem.

Yes, it could very well be the varicose veins. Symptoms of varicose range from pain to cramps or muscle spasms. Symptoms will get worse over time.

Most likely not. Muscle cramps and "spasms" are most likely related to inadequate hydration; calcium or potassium deficiency can also contribute to these symptoms.

Perhaps. Restless leg symptoms can be relieved with vein treatment very often.

I doubt that your varicose veins are responsible for the spasms. Varicose veins can cause many symptoms including cramps and restless legs but these symptoms are usually in the calves or thighs and not the feet. I would look for another cause of the foot spasms.

It is difficult to give you a definitive answer to your question. It is possible that varicose veins can contribute to various types of neuropathy, but to say that one particular vein is responsible for the spasms your are experiencing is virtually impossible. You may want to consider compression therapy (compression hose) to see if this alleviates you symptoms to any appreciable degree. Additionally, you may want to pursue other options and see a vein specialist and have a diagnostic ultrasound to determine if there is other venous incompetence involvement.
