The best treatment for leg cramps is to try to find the cause and treat that. Unfortunately, this is not always easy to do. Venous reflux can be a cause and should be evaluated. If this is negative and no other obvious causes are found such as medications, thyroid issues and medical problems then symptomatic treatment is indicated. Compression stockings may help to increase the venous return. A trial of this is worthwhile but it may not help.

Night cramps are often related to vein disease, but not always. Definitively you should try wearing compression stockings during the day and for few nights. If you notice an improvement, then you should definitively have an evaluation of your veins done by a Vein Specialist. Ideally should be a doctor with Board Certification in Phlebology (Vein Diseases)

Wearing a low pressure compression during the day and removing before bed can also help especially if you have some venous insufficiency or swelling. Typically they are not needed at night because the legs are elevated. All theories on this subject are anectdotal.

My vascular surgeon did an ultrasound and prescribed endovenous laser ablation. She also suggested that I wear compression stockings after the procedure. However, due to severe psoriasis and eczema on my feet, I cannot wear full-coverage stockings that cover them. They must always be in wet dressings, but cannot be fully covered. Would footless compression stockings be just as effective as full-coverage hose following the procedure?
