Endovenous Ablation and subsequent pregnancies.

I developed varicose veins during my 2nd pregnancy and have consulted with a physician regarding endovenous laser ablation. We would like to try for another baby after the procedure. How long should I wait to get pregnant after the procedure?

We suggest that our patients wait 6 months to get pregnant after an EVLT.

We commonly see 2nd pregnancy development of varicose veins. First pregnancy paves the way, second they don't go away. There is no reason you cannot get pregnant immediately (many of our patients have without a problem) but 3 months for full healing would be ideal.

There is no magic number of months here. I would say at least 3 months
since the inflammation will be maximum before this and although there is no
guarantee against further veins leaking, it will not likely be the same vein
after the subsequent pregnancies. You have a familial tendency to develop
leaking veins ant eh pregnant state increases pelvic pressure and increases
the venous blood volume, both of which are exacerbating conditions. With
endovenous ablation there is no reason to allow venous disease to progress
unabated through pregnancy if one can correct the problem before conception

Your question is excellent!!. The biggest problem is that we do not know. Nobody has done any long term investigation and comparison in this area. I would be your doctor, I could give you a better estimate depending in the size of your abnormal veins, whether you have any other large branches, how big are the varicose veins, etc. As a general guideline, I would probably recommend to wait 6 months at least and you should start wearing heavy compression stockings the very next day that you become pregnant.

Following an endovenous ablation I would recommend waiting about one month before becoming pregnant again. By one month (if not sooner) you should be fully healed.
