To make it simple, imagine the calf muscles as a pump or second heart which contracts and propels venous blood out of the leg. This avoids stasis and blood clots. Some calf muscles function poorly and
benefit from some extra squeeze. Contracting against the elastic recoil of the stocking helps. Stockings also reduce overfill of the calf muscle sinusoids and varicosities.

Compression stockings affect the venous capacitance more during rest [static capacitance]. They reduce venous capacitance more in the superficial venous system than the deep. The venous system capacitance in
the lower extremities is an important reservoir of circulation blood. Are you doing a research paper for school?

Veins hold about two-thirds of the total blood volume. Medical grade stockings work by compressing the veins to increase the venous return and reduce the venous back pressure or hypertension. This is exactly what happens when the calf muscles contract.

Compression stockings essentially decrease the leakage of the valves in the veins and increase the venous forward flow by decreasing veins diameter.

My vascular surgeon did an ultrasound and prescribed endovenous laser ablation. She also suggested that I wear compression stockings after the procedure. However, due to severe psoriasis and eczema on my feet, I cannot wear full-coverage stockings that cover them. They must always be in wet dressings, but cannot be fully covered. Would footless compression stockings be just as effective as full-coverage hose following the procedure?
