How long after laser ablation and microphlebectomy can I swim, shave and use self-tanner?

I had a laser ablation and microphlebectomy for a large varicosity from the inner thigh to the lower shin. When will I be able to shave my legs, go swimming and use lotion with a tanning agent?

Oftentimes patients can swim, shave and use self-tanner 10 days after a laser ablation and microphlebectomy.

You should be able to resume normal activities as soon as your incisions are healed completely. I recommend you apply the self-tanner to one small area and watch it for any unwanted discoloration before applying it to the entire leg.

This should be discussed with the surgeon since every physician's practice style is different.

I typically allow my patients to swim about 10 days post-procedure. However, we recommend avoiding direct sun exposure and/or using a high zinc sun screen. Self tanner may make the treated area look darker. You want to avoid increasing pigmentation in the area of the incisions or punctures. You can shave your legs almost anytime, but avoid the treated site until it is completely healed. Self tanners can be used after several weeks, but you should discuss this with your treating surgeon first.

You need to wait long enough for the microphlebectomy and access sites to heal. This usually takes about 7 to 10 days. It should be safe to do all of the above at the 2 week point, or slightly longer if not healed.
