I had a large vein in my leg ablated 8 months ago and it still is ropey and painful. Is this normal?

It hurts when I sit or stand and is tender to touch. I had a blood clot in the vein when the procedure was done.

The treated vein should not really be painful 8 months after treatment. The reason it probably still hurts is because the vein is still partially open causing a localized inflammation in the vein. This is why it still hurts. Completely shutting the vein down will help to eliminate the discomfort.

The vein you had ablated was probably a little deeper than this varicose vein on the surface. As a surgeon, I remove these veins at the same time as the ablation for this very reason. Statistically some of the surface veins should shrink down after an ablation of a saphenous veins but as you see, not always. The vein sounds inflammed and perhaps you should consider a consultation with a surgeon, vascular trained, who can evaluate and treat this for you.

You may still have a clot in the varicose vein off the great saphenous vein
which was closed and this clot may take awhile to resolve. Sometimes
drainage might be indicated.

Most ablated veins that produce this resolve within 2 to 3 months. 8 months is a long time for continued symptoms. You should have a repeat venous sonogram and follow up with your vein physician.
