I had severe groin pain after endovenous laser ablation, should I worry?

During an endovenous laser ablation treatment, the doctor said my veins were large and that he had to juice up the energy from 50 to 90. I paged the doctor that night because I was having severe groin pain. After an ultrasound, he told me to take one aspirin a day. Should I be worried? The closing at the vein is .25 centimeters away from the deep vein. I tried to ask the doctor and he quickly changed the subject.

Groin pain after an endovenous laser ablation is common. Severe pain is uncommon. The energy numbers you report don't sound out of line. I would recommend you sharing your concerns with your surgeon and having him or her follow you closely to make sure you are healing well without complications.

Wishing you the best of health,
Dr. Wright.

Were you able to have a follow-up appointment with your physician? If so, did the follow up include an ultrasound? When larger veins are ablated, there tends be more pain following the procedure. It is important to check for complications. Between 1.5-2cm away from the junction is considered standard with closing saphenous veins.

That is close to the deep system. I would recommend another follow up and ultrasound within one month to make sure a clot has not formed and that the scar has not extended.

Patients sometimes experience groin pain following laser ablation. This is probably secondary to nerve irritation around the saphenofemoral junction. This is not uncommon. It was wise to do a follow-up ultrasound and, since it was normal, your symptoms should improve over a short time.

Large veins usually produce more post-procedure discomfort than smaller veins. If the closed vein is so close to the femoral vein (deep vein), you should be put on blood thinners right away, at least for a short period of time (2-3 weeks). Otherwise, you could be at risk of deep vein thrombosis.
