I recently developed spider veins, should I wear compression stockings all of the time? Will they prevent more spider veins from developing?

Compression stockings will not eliminate or prevent spider veins from developing. Stockings may slow future development.

Compression stockings are primarily a symptomatic treatment. They do not get rid of abnormal veins, and they do not slow down the progression of new abnormal veins. Vein disease is inherited; therefore, nothing anyone does will permanently get rid of your risk of developing new vein issues. However, having your existing vein issues addressed will slow down how fast you develop new veins.

It could help reduce the progression of spider veins. I would have a leg ultrasound done to rule out reflux from other veins. Spider veins on the outer aspect of the leg, especially the thighs, is common and usually not associated with underlying vein disease. This is usually easily treated with sclerotherapy injections.
Wearing compression stockings certainly will not hurt anything and if you want to wear them, do it just during the day. It is not advised that you wear the compression stockings when in the bed, or while sleeping. They are especially important to wear if you are on your feet for several hours at a time.

Unfortunately, the compression stockings do not prevent spider veins from forming. Once you have the tendency to have them, you can control them with treatment. That said, you should be aware that even if you have your spider veins treated and they disappear, there is a possibility that new ones will develop.

While compression stockings may slow down the progression, they probably won't prevent more spider veins from developing. There are no medical studies that show they can.

Compression stockings might make your legs feel better but there is no scientific evidence to suggest it will prevent spider veins from developing. I hope that helps.

Compression stockings work by decreasing the venous pressure and increasing the venous return to the heart. For spider veins, a compression stocking around 20mmHg is sufficient. It would be beneficial for you to wear compression hose as often as possible, but even wearing compression is no guarantee that spider veins will not occur. Many factors contribute to spider veins, including genetics, pregnancy, aging and sun exposure.

Spider veins are usually an inherited trait. Compression hose won't prevent new veins but will help slow the process. However, if you only have a few, you may want to try them when standing for prolonged periods. Perhaps getting them treated at this state may improve the appearance of your legs, so hose won't be necessary.
