The underlying cause of lipodermatosclerosis is CHRONIC venous insufficiency. The skin changes are a result of long standing venous insufficiency. If there is a corresponding saphenous vein reflux, endovenous ablation will help this but will not reverse the skin changes. Vein ablation,by reducing reflux, will help to prevent future ulcerations.

Lipodermatosclerosis implies permanent skin damage. The endovenous procedures stabilize the problem and potentially help avoid ulcers. Skin discoloration will persist however.

LDS is a chronic skin change due to long standing venous insufficiency. It would be wise to treat the vein disease if possible. The LDS areas may improve with time as well. The problems with LDS is that these areas may eventually break down to form ulcerations.

Indirectly yes. The cause of LDS is venous insufficiency. If a patient has isolated surface vein problems and these are effectively treated with Laser Ablation. LDS should improve over time. The pigmentation usually doesn't change much however.

In patients with combined surface and deep vein insufficiency the may only partially improve because all of the vein valve problems are not treated if you only treat the surface veins with laser.
