Not the same procedure.

A consultation and ultrasound scan of your legs is step number one. That way, the vein expert will know if the symptoms you are presenting relate to an underlying condition for venous reflux. If this is the case, the vein expert will help determine the best medical vein treatment plan.

Vein treatments options include:

— Radiofrequency ablation (RFA)
— Endovenous laser ablation (EVLA)
— VenaSeal
— Ambulatory phlebectomy
— Sclerotherapy

These are minimally invasive procedures. Ligation is a surgical procedure. Not all the cases are the same or require the same treatment, and not everyone responds to treatment in the same way. It is important to choose the best approach for varicose vein care under the care of a board-certified vein specialist.

Ligating is a surgical procedure involving an incision over the saphenous vein in the groin and disconnecting it and usually doing the same at the ankle. The vein is then pulled from the top incision to the lower incision. This is called ligation and stripping. Ligating alone involves making incisions to remove or tie off veins. Both EVLT and RF involve inserting a catheter into a vein to both seal the refluxing valves and essentially evaporate the vein over time.

No, they are completely different than Vein Ligation, or Vein Stripping.
EVLT and RF are minimally invasive catheter based procedure which use laser or RF energy to seal the involved vein closed. These procedure have minimal downtime or discomfort associated with them. Ligation or Stripping are surgeries which require open incisions, dissection, and sutures, and involve either tying off and dividing the vein, or surgically removing it from the length of the leg. They are much more painful, and have a much longer post-op course and recovery.
See a qualified vein specialist to see what is most appropriate for you.

No. Endovenous laser ablation (EVLT) and Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) utilize heat to close veins that are refluxing (leaking). These are highly effective methods of treatment. Ligation is a surgical procedure where the refluxing vein is tied off. Ligation has poor results.

Vein ligation usually refers to placement of a stitch around the greater saphenous vein just below its insertion into the femoral vein through asmall surgical incision. This procedure rarely is performed as endovenous thermal ablation by LASER or radiofrequency have proven to be more effective.

Ligation refers to the physical tying off of the vein through a surgical incision. EVLT or RFA involves the closing off of the entire vein through either laser or radio frequency energy. ELVT or RFA is generally considered the preferred method of treatment in most cases.

Vein ligation is a surgical procedure in which the surgeon makes an incision, isolated the vein and passes a ligature (a thread of suture material) and closes the vein.
EVLT and RFA are catheter-based procedures in which the surgeon inserts a fiber inside the vein, the tip of the fiber generates heat and produces enough irritation inside the vein that the vein closes.

EVLT and RFO are not the same procedure as ligation. They are minimally invasive procedures that are an alternative to ligation and stripping.
