I had total hip replacement on the left side and after surgery wore thigh-highTed stockings on both legs. I woke up in the middle of the night with stinging pain in one leg above the knee. My stocking had rolled down. The doctor did ultrasound and there was no clot. My leg hurts and then goes numb. Is this normal and what should I do?
Your complaint is not normal or common. Stockings can roll down especially if not fitted properly. I don't know why you have "stinging". It could be from pressure on a nerve from the stocking. It could be from the surgery. Do you still need to wear the stocking? If so get a garter belt to hold it up.

TEDS hose are often insufficient compression for more than a couple of days and can indeed make swelling worse. Consider seeing a doctor for stronger hose.

TED stockings have very low compression, thus are for bed confined use
primarily. Since I do not know how many hours of compression from the rolled stocking
you experienced, it is difficult to gauge. I also do not know your age or
weight. Due to the low compression, I recommend looking for other sources, like operative
positioning, lumbar nerve root compression, etc. A repeat duplex scan after one week may
help to definitively rule out blood clots in deep veins.

It is unusual for Ted stockings to cause the kind of pain and numbness that your describe. If occurred on the same side as your hip surgery then I would be inclined to think that it is related to the procedure or possibly a spinal or epidural if you had these. If none of this applies to you and the non operated leg is the problem, other causes could be back related or local irritation. The stocking would be low on my list as the cause of the problem.

You need to get your leg evaluated. We advise our vein patients to not wear compassion stockings at night. I recommended elevation and a cold iced pack. But you should go get your leg re-evaluated.

Very unusual. You should get your arteries checked also.

This can happen with poorly fitting stockings. Get proper graded compression hose by a name brand like Medi, Jobst, Sigvaris or Juzo. Your MD must order and specify compression level.
