Compression stockings after sclerotherapy attempt to limit the volume of blood that remains in the vein after treatment. The less blood remaining in the vein, the sooner the vein (and the blood within it) will be absorbed and be gone. Until that time, the vein can be visible and palpable. In addition, the more blood that remains in the vein, the darker and the longer brown lines may appear along the course of the treated veins. This brown discoloration represents the remnants of blood that remained behind in the treated vein. It almost always disappears but can take months (rarely years) to be fully gone.
