Compression stockings after sclerotherapy attempt to limit the volume of blood that remains in the vein after treatment. The less blood remaining in the vein, the sooner the vein (and the blood within it) will be absorbed and be gone. Until that time, the vein can be visible and palpable. In addition, the more blood that remains in the vein, the darker and the longer brown lines may appear along the course of the treated veins. This brown discoloration represents the remnants of blood that remained behind in the treated vein. It almost always disappears but can take months (rarely years) to be fully gone.

It is very important that you make an attempt to wear your support hose within the first month after sclerotherapy. Doing so will render the best result. The first week is the most important.

Compression helps the calf muscles to contract more forcefully, emptying blood from treated veins and reducing the risk of deep vein thrombosis.

It is a controversial topic. While some physicians recommend stockings, others do not.

Yes. The compression stockings help compress the treated veins so that the sclerosing agent will stay in the veins and not get washed out with blood flow. This process increases your success rate.

There have been some good studies that showed that wearing compression stockings after sclerotherapy leads to better results and fewer complications like matting and bruising.

It is beneficial to wear compression hose after sclerotherapy to decrease the inflammation and compress the veins. If you cannot wear the hose, some physicians advise elevating the legs in a lazy boy chair for several hours afterwards.

Yes, it is very important that compression stockings are worn after sclerotherapy for these four reasons:
1) It reduces inflammation, which means less swelling and pain
2) It reduces the amount of clot that forms in the treated vein, so there are fewer complications
3) It compresses the vein walls together during early healing, which produces a better outcome
4) It helps keep the vein from reopening while it is healing, so fewer treatment failures

There are a few studies showing better sclerotherapy results with the use of compression hose. The average recommendation urges patients to wear the stockings for at least one week. However, some doctors will recommend less time and others will suggest more.

I recommend patients wear compression stockings for 48 hours after sclerotherapy. The compression helps to keep the sclerosing solution stuck to the veins, which helps to dissolve them. In addition, compression decreases swelling, bruising, and possibly even staining and matting.
