Will compression stockings cause complications with heart conditions? I have a replacement tissue mitral valve and have had maze procedure and two cardio-versions, but still keep flipping back into atrial fibrillation, which is controlled by medication. My pulse still varies from between 90 and 115. Will compression stockings affect all this?
To the best of my knowledge, the answer is no. There is no problem with the use of compression stockings. The two systems are not directly related. As a matter of fact, there is some benefit to using compression stockings they improve circulation and make it easier for you to get exercise. Of course, check with your cardiologist to set up your best exercise routine!

I see no harm in using compression stockings, unless you have severe peripheral arterial disease. They may help with ankle swelling as well.

As long as your peripheral arterial circulation is adequate, compression stockings are fine.

I have to refer you back to the physician that is taking care of your atrial fibrillation. Each physician has their own policies on treatment.

It should not, but you should discuss with your cardiologist.

In theory, compression stockings should not be a problem with atrial fibrillation.

Yes, it is safe to wear compression stockings. No, they will not negatively affect your cardiac problems.

Great question! And, the answer is, we highly recommend that you do wear a medical grade compression of 20-30 mmHg. A knee length will be fine. If you have difficulty applying 20-30mmHg, you would still be okay in the sub-clinical strength of 15- 20 mmHg.

There is nothing that you should worry about. You can certainly wear compression stockings. Those heart conditions do not preclude you from using compression stockings.

Yes, wearing compression stockings is still a healthy thing for your legs.

The question of whether to wear compression stockings and how much compression should be decided by your vein specialist and your cardiologist cooperatively, due to various extenuating circumstances. The stockings do not affect arrhythmia itself, but if congestive heart failure exists, I would defer.

Compression stockings will not affect this at all. You can wear them safely.
