Is it safe to have endovenous laser ablation and foam sclerotherapy on the same leg on the same day?
Do two procedures carry more risk if carried out on the same day?
Yes, it is safe to have both procedures done on the same leg on the same day. The two procedures are different ways of closing off refluxing veins and there are usually technical reasons why both techniques would need to be used. So as long as your doctor is skilled in both techniques it is no problem. There are risks for each procedure but they are very low and not prohibitive for doing both procedures on the same day. The two procedures can be carried out at the same setting. You should be checked to see if the foam cleared your system before standing.
Our patients are advised to drink plenty of fluid and do lots of walking but to avoid using abdominal muscles, heavy lifting or exercise on the day of the procedure.
In our practice I will use foam to seal perforator veins but not on varicose veins as they are best removed.
All procedures from major dental to minor day surgery procedures all carry the same risks. If you follow your post-care instructions carefully, wear your compression for at least 48-72hrs continuously and then during the day for at least a week, you should reduce any complication risks.

Yes. But not always done this way. Depends on anatomy.

Yes we have done this many times for various types of combined vein problems.
There may be slightly increased risk with combined procedures, however we haven't had problems such as this.

It is safe to have both done on the same day. EVLT should be done first because the foam may interfere with the ultrasound pictures of the saphenous vein and saphenofemoral junction.

Yes, it is safe to have both procedures done on the same day. Many physicians (myself included) feel that treatment of the abnormal varicosities with sclerotherapy at the same time as laser ablation increases the overall chances of success and improves patient outcomes.
