After varicose vein surgery I have been experiencing pain in both shins. The surgeon said this is caused by the full-leg compression stocking I wore for 2 weeks. Is shin pain normal after wearing a full-length hose?
Yes, compression stockings can cause discomfort during the times that they are worn. However, the discomfort should not persist after their wear has been discontinued.

It is very unusual for compression hose to cause any pain. If they are measured and fitted correctly they should be comfortable. We fit our patients before surgery ourselves and use a high-quality hose. The day of the procedure isn't the time to learn to wear hose. They should not cause any "after" pain when you cease wearing them.

Determining whether your shin pain is normal would require more information. What is your age, height and weight? What procedure did you have? What other medical conditions do you have? What compression did you wear? Did you wear the compression stocking during the day or night, or both? How much have you walked? What are your leg measurements and stocking size?

Full-length compression stockings don't usually cause shin pain unless they fit poorly and are too tight.

No, it is not normal to have shin pain after wearing a full-length hose. Maybe the compression stocking does not fit right. You could always try another brand.

Shin pain can occur after wearing compression stockings, but it is not a common complaint among patients. I can only think of a few patients who have reported having shin pain after wearing their hose.

The shin pain you are experiencing may be due to the compression stockings. Perhaps a larger size would offer more comfort. Talk to your surgeon and have him/her assess the situation.

Shin pain can be due to irritation from support hose. However, there is a difference between shin pain and numbness, which could be due to nerve irritation. This would be dependent on where the procedure was done on your leg and what type of procedure was done. If the discomfort is due to the stockings, then it should resolve when you no longer wear them.

Not usually

I believe shin pain is unusual after wearing compression stockings but without knowing your medical history and how long the pain persisted after you last wore the hose, it is difficult to evaluate. I would check with your vein doctor and consider a follow-up ultrasound to rule out other sources of pain.

Not normally, but everyone is different. The shin pain you are experiencing is not harmful.
