Ulcers after Vnus treatment
What would cause large ulcers on 1 leg after the VNUS treatment? One leg developed 7 ulcers the size of "quarters" but the 2nd leg had no ulcers, except for small blisters.

I would guess that sclerotherapy was also performed at the same time. Ulcers are a potential complication of sclerotherapy. This should be evaluated by your treating physician.

It is difficult to comment properly without seeing the leg. Possibilities include injury due to dressings, thermal injury, medication reaction, and pre-existing ulcers.

Without specifying the location of these ulcers and blisters, it is difficult to address your question. I am assuming these areas are located on the thigh and if this is correct there are a few possible causes. The early experience with endovenous VNUS was associated with significant skin burns which is currently quite rare. The dosage of delivered power as well as the protective technique of Tumescent Anesthesia have now evolved to prevent burn complications. Another possible explanation of thigh skin blistering or ulcers could be allergy of any tape used after the procedure. Tape can also cause surprising degree of skin problems if applied tightly when and can act as an irritating traction to the skin. Allergy to the prep antiseptic can also cause chemical burns if the patient has a sensitivity to the solution.

If these developed in a line over the medial leg and thigh over the course of the great saphenous vein, they would most likely be related to thermal injury from the RF catheter. Some times the vein is very superficial and unless enough fluid is infused around the vein, the fat and skin can become necrotic. I never had this occur but I have seen patients who have suffered this complication.
