What degree of compression do I need?

I had total knee replacement surgery one week ago today. I would like to purchase a second pair of compression stockings. What degree of compression do I need? I am a female, 69 years old.

I recommend 20-30 mmHg graded compression stockings for routine applications. This degree of compression is comfortable and works well.

That would be left up to the physician that did your knee surgery. There are various degrees of compression.

Your surgeon may have a preference, but typically 15-20 mmHg pressure is adequate. As you don't have a full range of movement due to the knee surgery it may be difficult to get anything stronger onto your foot. There are assistive devices available also.

Medium compression (20-30mmHg) should give you the correct amount of compression.

That depends. First, if you have any arterial disease, I would recommend 15 mmHg pressure, equivalent to TED stockings. If not, 20 to 30 mmHg along with regular walking and leg elevation would suffice in DVT prophylaxis. If you have a lot of edema from surgery and also have venous insufficiency, then 30 to 40 mmHg is appropriate to decrease edema and aid in healing your recent surgery.

My vascular surgeon did an ultrasound and prescribed endovenous laser ablation. She also suggested that I wear compression stockings after the procedure. However, due to severe psoriasis and eczema on my feet, I cannot wear full-coverage stockings that cover them. They must always be in wet dressings, but cannot be fully covered. Would footless compression stockings be just as effective as full-coverage hose following the procedure?
