What do I do if my thigh-high stockings are digging into my groin?

I'm a few days out from a knee arthroscopy and manipulation. I have had the TED hose before when they did an ACL reconstruction and never had a problem. The stocking that was recently prescribed has been digging into my groin, causing it to become raw and painful. What can I do to fix this?

Your only option is to get rid of the stockings. If you are ambulating, it should not be a problem. The other option is to do away with the TED hose and get real compression stockings. Should you choose to go this route, make sure they fit properly and are the right size.

Try folding the top of the compression stockings over and putting them into a lower position. If the results are not satisfactory, you will need to be refitted.

One simple solution is to put a sock under the band. This will take pressure off of the groin and protect against irritation.

You can ease down your hose so that they do not come up so high. The trick is not to pull up as high once you get above the knee. It sounds like they put you in a hose which is too long. Typically they are worn 2 fingerbreadths below the buttock crease. When applied like this, they should not sit up that high. Alternatively, you can put a little padding in that area to make them a little less abrasive.

Don't pull them up so high. The TED hose only need to go about halfway to the upper third of your thigh. Any higher and they hurt!

Your stockings do not fit properly. You need to get a pair that fit comfortably. If you continue with your present stockings, they will do more harm than good.

It sounds like the size is wrong. Go back to the person who prescribed them and ask to be remeasured. TED hose and compression stockings are not supposed to hurt, especially if they are the proper fit.

My vascular surgeon did an ultrasound and prescribed endovenous laser ablation. She also suggested that I wear compression stockings after the procedure. However, due to severe psoriasis and eczema on my feet, I cannot wear full-coverage stockings that cover them. They must always be in wet dressings, but cannot be fully covered. Would footless compression stockings be just as effective as full-coverage hose following the procedure?
