What to do when compression stockings increase symptoms?

I had cramp for about a week in right let then swelling around ankle. Went to vein specialist, did ultrasound. No clots but could have been after the fact. Prescribed compression stockings because there is so much pain. Unfortunately no health insurance.

Compression is a conservative management of venous disease and not definitive therapy. I will suggest you get insurance or a payment plan and undergo endovenous ablation.

Cease wearing the stockings immediately and seek evaluation for symptoms. Lower extremity symptoms are related to three main categories: 1.Vascular (arterial and/ or venous); 2. Musculoskeletal; 3. Neurologic (peripheral vs central).

Sometimes patients don't tolerate stockings well, and if your problem is not venous in nature they are unlikely to help anyway.

Could be superficial thrombophlebitis. As long as no deep clots then use advil and continue to stay active. Will gradually improve. If not then be re-evaluated.

You might need to go to the ER and have a comprehensive workup. Compression hose normally (if measured and fitted correctly) decrease symptoms.

If the stockings are causing pain then do not wear them. It may be that the pain is not due to a vein problem and the compression is worsening the symptoms. Find the cause of the pain.

My vascular surgeon did an ultrasound and prescribed endovenous laser ablation. She also suggested that I wear compression stockings after the procedure. However, due to severe psoriasis and eczema on my feet, I cannot wear full-coverage stockings that cover them. They must always be in wet dressings, but cannot be fully covered. Would footless compression stockings be just as effective as full-coverage hose following the procedure?
