Why do I have pain behind my left knee (back of leg, not kneecap)?

I had endovenous laser treatment last week (~50 cm strip behind my left leg, 72 hr f/u sono and no clotting evident). Bruising is resolving nicely but the entry point for the laser fiber is sore and painful. Should I be concerned about nerve damage?

Many times the pain does not subside until a few weeks after an ablation has been performed. This includes the time it takes for the nerves to heal. If after a few weeks the pain does not start to go away or becomes worse, call your treating physician and schedule another ultrasound to see if there are other veins that need to be treated.

No, that sore spot will go away. Like any bruise, it often gets worse before it gets better. Give it some time.

Tenderness and discomfort are not unusual following endovenous laser treatment; however, you should discuss this concern with your treating physician since he/she performed the procedure and are accountable for your care.

It is common to have pain at the catheter entry site following the endovenous laser ablation procedure. The discomfort can sometimes take several weeks to entirely resolve. Is the area red and swollen? If it is, then it could be infected and you should go back to the doctor's office. If it is not, I suggest taking Motrin or Advil (ibuprofen) one to two tablets every 4 to 6 hours for pain and to reduce inflammation. With this measure, your symptoms should subside over the next 1-2 weeks.

You should not be concerned about nerve damage. The entrance site is the area through which all the work is done and it can be sore for some time. Apply heat to the area and take ibuprofen for pain/inflammation. If it does not resolve by 2 weeks post-procedure, then follow up with your treating physician.
