Why does it take so long for Neurotin to take effect? Also, are full panty compression stockings more effective and why?

If it takes about 20 mins for an Aleve to take effect, why does it take up to 6 months for Neurotin to take effect like several of you have mentioned? Also, I like to wear thigh-high compression stockings. Are the full panty compression stockings more effective and if so, why?

Perhaps discuss your medications with the prescribing doctor who can explain the pharmacology to you. If you like thigh length hose there is no reason to wear panty-hose length as they typically do not have very much compresson at the top above the groin area.

Neurontin does take some time to build in your system, usually 3-4 weeks. It is not a pain killer like Aleve so it does not work the same way. Neurontin's purpose is to stabilize the nerves to carry signals properly. If you are taking Neurontin for vein pain, then it will not work. If you do have varicose veins, then find a physician that is accredited by the American College of Phlebology. He/She can assess your condition and recommend treatment. As far as the compression panty stockings, unless you have pelvic pain, then a full panty compression stocking or thigh-high stockings will not make a difference.

How long it takes for a drug to take effect depends on how the drug works and the overall pharmakinetics of how the drug establishes itself within the body. Comparing Aleve to Neurotin is not a good way to look at it since they are two completely different drugs and are used for different reasons. Aleve is an anti-inflammatory drug and thus works much quicker than Neurotin, which is a neuropathic drug. Neurotin is great for things like diabetic neuropathy and other types of peripheral neuropathy. Unfortunately, primary nerve-related complaints do not correct in 30 minutes. They typically take years to develop and take equally as long to improve; if they improve at all. As for the stockings, a thigh-high hose is better for you in the setting of vein disease than a knee-high compression stocking. I am not aware of much advantage going from a panty stocking to a thigh-high, except for comfort.

As far as neurontin, you have to ask your doc. The panty compression hoses are more effective simply because they cover/compress a larger area.

Neurontin is for nerve pain and has nothing to do with vascular or vein reflux symptoms.

Neurontin takes time to build up therapeutic levels in your body, and this occurs over time with repeated use. Full panty compression stockings are not any more effective than thigh-high ones but may be more comfortable for some and less so for others. If you like to wear thigh-high hose and they provide comfort, continue to use them.

They are different drugs with different paths of metabolism, and different mechanisms of action. You cannot compare why one works quickly and the other does not. I am not aware of any functional difference between the stockings beyond comfort.
