You should consider visiting a vein center to have venous doppler evaluations for venous insufficiency. Most venous dopplers only check for deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Only a specialized vein practice is adequately skilled to perform the latter.

People get leg swelling for a multitude of reasons, only one of which is vein disease. Heart failure, kidney/liver problems, and lymphedema are only some of the other causes of leg swelling. That being said, anything that presents blood from freely returning back to the heart can cause swelling. Since there are so many potential sources for your leg swelling, it is very difficult for me to help determine your specific cause without actually seeing the legs and having some additional medical questions answered.

There are many reasons your legs can swell and guessing would do a disservice. Instead, schedule an appointment with your primary care physician. He/she can evaluate you and hopefully determine the cause of your symptom.

Common causes for leg swelling include superficial venous insufficiency as well as systemic problems (liver, kidney, heart problems). Duplex ultrasound in the standing position can detect superficial vein problems which may not be overlooked when looking only for clots. See a vein specialist.

Swelling may be due to leaking valves in the veins. You should see a vein specialist.

Venous insufficiency may be your issue. Arterial problems generally do not cause leg swelling and clots in the venous system. My algorithm is to first rule out acute or chronic blood clots in the patient with a swollen leg and then to selectively investigate them with an insufficiency ultrasound, which involves different maneuvers and takes a bit longer to perform than the simple ultrasound technique for clots.

Leg swelling can result from many different underlying causes and is sometimes called "idiopathic;" meaning, the cause is unknown. You should have an evaluation with your primary care doctor for blood work, blood pressure check, etc. Restricting salt intake, staying well hydrated, regular exercise and weight loss will usually help with this problem. A knee-length, low compression stocking that is properly measured and fitted will keep the swelling under control also. Check to see if there was any venous insufficiency in the superficial veins on the doppler. This test is usually done in the standing position.

There are many reasons for leg swelling, and vein problems are just one of them. Heart problems, kidney problems, and lymphedema are just a few other medical issues that can cause leg swelling.

There are many reasons for legs to swell including medications, origins in the heart, kidney or liver, lung disease, lymphedema and chronic venous insufficiency just to name a few. There are many other causes of leg swelling and usually it requires an extensive evaluation to determine the cause which could include CT scanning as well as MRI. You should be evaluated by a physician.
